Steam what?

If you visit my web site: You'll notice that listed under my current works in progress is a book called THE INVENTOR'S SECRET. IS is the first book in a new series I'm writing and genre of that series is steampunk.

When I mention the word steampunk I get one of two reactions: 1) AWESOME! 2) Steam what?

The first reaction reflects the hard-core enthusiasm of steampunk fans. The second reveals that while steampunk is slipping into the mainstream, it's still a relatively unknown genre. PBS created a web piece about steampunk that's the best quick tutorial I've seen and I'm delighted to share it with you:

As a historian, steampunk is a dream genre for me because it means I'm able to reimagine history while engaging the issues and questions I find most compelling about the past, and I can create all the maniacal and fantastic, beautiful and terrible guns and gadgets I desire. And the clothes! I debuted a steampunk outfit of my design at Comic Con, and I predict much more steampunk fashion in my future.
So that's a little bit on what steampunk is and it's one of the worlds I'm currently living in. That's all I can say about that...for now....

  1. You are such a tease! I love your outfit in the above picture :) I cannot wait to hear more about THE INVERNTOR'S SECRET!

  2. Love it! While I can believe there are people who haven't heard of steampunk (as opposed to cyborgs. Seriously, hasn't everyone heard of cyborgs?), I'm still surprised at the genre's current popularity.

I'd been trying to come up with a proper steampunk novel idea, but my muse failed me until I decided to reinvent the genre. Without steam. Or Victorian London. Or corsets...

It's still gonna be fun, I swear!

    Good luck with the wip!

  3. i just finished reading your book nightshade like 10 minutes ago and just wanted to say......... BEST BOOK I EVER READ!!!!!!!! seriously i loved it now im gonna go to walmart and buy the 2nd :) also i was wondering are you an otaku? it kinda looked like you were so i thought cool an author who likes anime

  4. I can't wait to see what you come up with. I've loved every steampunk novel I've read so far and hope to see more YA authors delve into the genre.

  5. I love the idea of steampunk. Wish I could wear some of the stuff like, all the time, but I don't. Sad. I'm considering writing a book that has some elements of steampunk but never could do a full steampunk novel or series. I'm not a historian type.

But you writing one. So exciting and I hope it is one day available because I will want to read it.

  6. Steampunk is one of my favorite genres. It was actually one of my college professors that introduced the genre to me. She teaches Victorian Lit. and told me I should try reading a steampunk book. I was hooked after just one read. I'm super excited to read THE INVENTOR'S SECRET. Can't wait! :)

  7. That's what I love about your books -- they're so intelligently written with subtext and hidden meanings and all kinds of awesome. I am definitely in the OMGANDREAISWRITINGASTEAMPUNKNOVELAWESOME category =D

  8. Congratulations Andrea. :) I really like steampunk fashion and steampunk is just darn fun to say. BTW love the tights!
